John Coaching 2008
Coaching
John Buchanan’s coaching record at all levels of the game of cricket is impressive; however, it is his success with the Australian Cricket team from 1999-2007 which sets this coach apart from his contemporaries.
During this period, John coached the team to a world record number of straight Test Matches (16 wins), consecutive One Day International victories (21) and set an unprecedented World Cup record with 2 World Cups and 24 games undefeated. At the time of his retirement, the Australian Cricket Team were the World Cup Champions, Test Cricket Champions and One Day Champions, and also returned the Ashes to Australia in early 2007. This record of victories makes John the most successful coach in history with a winning record of over 75% since 1999 having lost only 2 Test series in 26, while at the same time winning 27 of the 37 ODI series contested.
John Buchanan is also renowned for delivering Queensland their first Sheffield Shield title in 1994/5 – a feat that took some 69 years to achieve! In five years of coaching Queensland, they won the Sheffield Shield and Mercantile Mutual Cup, twice each.
While these are the numbers, John always emphasizes it is a total team effort which achieves High Performance results. It is never about one person.
Nonetheless, the coach plays a significant role in helping to create, nurture, guide, and maintain a High Performance Team.

The coaching process
The essence of Coaching or Managing or Leading is what is ‘between the lines’ than the actual lines themselves. It is the ability to be as close to or as distant from your closest friend in the organization and still retain a relationship. It is knowing when to use silence, or different body language or an unusual style or the totally unexpected.
John outlines these thoughts and more in his 10 Step Approach to Coaching.
