Sport can be its own worst enemy at times as it refuses to present a united voice on important issues such as improving long term health of society through access to good physical activity programs for young children and adolescents as more and more of such programs are discontinued due to schools directing teaching resources elsewhere, urban development’s gobbling up recreational areas, causing over populated and under resourced free safe space areas for children and families; and allowing its very visible promotors of sport and the virtues of sport, the athlete, succumb to the need for success and using whatever means they can to give them a chance for the ‘pot of gold at the end of the rainbow’.
Sport like all avenues of society needs good and strong leadership.
It needs people of strong moral fibre to undertake the difficult role of coaching, whether that be at grass roots or through to the elite end of sport.

Buchanan Success Coaching programs, online learning, videos and articles are taken solely from one of the greatest sport coaches in Australian sports history, John Buchanan.
John successfully coached domestic (Queensland Bulls) and national (the Australian Cricket team) from 1994 to 2007. His achievements and winning records are unsurpassed.
John’s background to coaching was not the usual pathway as he played relatively little first class cricket; he worked for nearly 14 years in the sport and recreation industry as well doing academic studies which saw him gain –
- Human Movement Studies degree from the University of Queensland
- Diploma of Teaching from Griffith University
- Master of Arts from University of Alberta, Canada
- Hon PhD from University of Queensland
John became a fulltime professional coach when he took on the role as Head Coach, Queensland Bulls in 1994.
Consequently, John has brought different approaches to the role of coaching.
